While celebrating the great cup results for two of our teams last weekend, it is also worth highlighting the work that went on across the club for the games to be played, writes a committee member in our latest Hack - Behind the Scenes at Marauders column...

Diamonds and Phoenix won their semi and quarter finals, respectively, but there were countless hours of preparation done by club coaches, parents, players, and other volunteers, to ensure the matches could go ahead.

Due to a car boot sale on St Mary’s Park, it was reluctantly decided the two nine-aside home games would need to be switched to Sandgate Playing Fields.

As well as the administration required from managers to organise the switch, the field needed to be prepped following a few months without a match being played there.

The council mowed the field earlier in the week, but due to the length and thickness of the grass, the pitch was covered in cuttings.

Wolves coaches had two weeks previously lined the pitches but due to the cutting, it needed doing again.

Volunteers manoeuvred equipment and paint between the two sites on Friday during their dinner hours from work.

Coaches from Diamonds (battling a bad back) and Phoenix, plus an ex-Marauders player adding some much-needed useful energy, spent Saturday afternoon raking the lines so that they could then paint them.

In a brilliant effort from parents and kids, the evening saw volunteers from Phoenix (and a Cheetah) pile onto the field to rake the rest of the pitch and ensure there was a clear playing surface for both teams.
